Nib file, Binding, and Memory Management in Cocoa

"Objects in a nib file are initially created with a retain count of 1. As it rebuilds the object hierarchy, however, Cocoa autoreleases any objects that have a parent or owning object, such as views nested inside view hierarchies. By the time the nib-loading code is complete, only the top-level objects in the nib file have a positive retain count and no owning object. This makes the top-level objects a potential memory leak if your code does not assume responsibility for them. "

You don't need to worry about this if the File's Owner is NSWindowController or NSViewController, or their subclasses.

Use either of the following ways to dealloc the top-levels

- use [NSNib instantiateNibWithOwner: topLevelObjects:] to keep an array to top-level objects, and release them in dealloc

- create an IBOutlet for each top-level object in the nib and release the objects in dealloc, can use property
@property (nonatomic, retain) IBOutlet NSTableView *mTableView;

Note you may still get a memory leak if you use Cocoa bindings in the nib. This occurs when an object in the nib binds to the File’s Owner. The File’s Owner never gets deallocated in this case, and thus neither do the top-level objects.

- Unbind the bindings programmatically. You’ll need to do this elsewhere than the File Owner’s dealloc,
which won’t get called unless you unbind.

- Bind to a different object in the nib rather than to the File’s Owner.

Now in MainMenu.nib, the file's owner is NSApplication.

(1) Subclass NSApplication so that it has outlets to all the top-level
objects and release them on NSApplication dealloc. (rarely used?)
(2) Instantiate a delegate to handle applicationWillTerminate: and use
that to release all objects, except, urm, how about the delegate
itself
(3) Don't worry about it, since the app is going away anyway and will
take with it all top-level objects.

Nib file explained

Interface Builder 2.x. The NIB will take the form of a package of three files:
classes.nib, info.nib,and keyedobjects.nib. The last of these contains all the
information Cocoa needs to reconstitute objects for use in an application. The other
two files contain information about the class hierarchy and other settings that made it
possible to edit the NIB in IB 2.0; removing them produces a NIB package that is
usable,but not editable (unless you deselect “Flatten compiled XIB files” in your
target’s build settings). This form of NIB can be used on any version of Mac OS X,and
edited by IB 2 or 3.

These are guaranteed by the Standard:

\a is alert (whether this means a bleep, a flash, or something else, is
implementation-dependant).
\b is backspace.
\f is form feed.
\n is new line. It is the character which represents a new line in files
opened in text mode.
\r is carriage return.
\t is a horizontal tab. Size depends on the implementation.
\v is a vertical tab, whatever that is on modern devices.
\' is a literal single quote mark.
\" is a literal double quote mark.
\? is a literal question mark (trigrahps, avoidance, ftpo).
\\ is a literal backslash.

\ is the character represented by that octal number, and
\x is the character represented by that hexadecimal number.
The only ones of these of which you reliably know the meaning are
\0, \x0, and equivalent, all of which are character 0, the null
character.

\x1b, as you mention above, is the character with hex value 1b, i.e.
decimal 27. This may or may not represent ESC. It is the character point
for ESC in a very common character set; whether this means that your
implementation also transmits it as an Escape, and whether the OS then
does something sensible with it, is up to them. The Standard neither
does nor reasonably can require it.

MySQL: Reset Auto Increament Number

I have a database table with a auto increment column for primary key. As the records being add and delete many times, the auto increment value will keep increasing.

Problem One:
If I have entered 10 records, and deleted 9th, 10th records. The next auto increment value will be 11, not 9.

Solution:
Run a query: ALTER TABLE tablename AUTO_INCREMENT = 1

This will reset the next auto increment value to current largest value in the auto increment column + 1. So, the auto increment value of next inserted record will start from 9.

Problem Two:
If I have entered 10 records, and deleted center records - 4th, 5th. I want to insert next record as 4th not 11th.

Solution:
Run the following query:
SET insert_id = 4;
INSERT INTO tablename VALUES (’blah’, ‘…’);

This will add the next record into record 4th.

The SET insert_id = #(where # is the next auto increment value you want to use) will reset the next auto increament value, the next query(INSERT) you run will use your choice of value.

Note: only effective for the immediate next query, one time.

How to change "MyCompanyName" ?

Where does ProjectBuilder (Xcode) stores the string to use as "__MyCompanyName__" ?

Open the ProjectBuilder preferences file (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ProjectBuilder.plist) or the Xcode one (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Xcode.plist) and edit the dictionary associated with the key PBXCustomTemplateMacroDefinitions (create one if it does not exist, as child of the root node), edit or add the key ORGANIZATIONNAME, the associated string value will be used when PB creates new source files.

You could also do it via Terminal.app:
defaults write com.apple.ProjectBuilder PBXCustomTemplateMacroDefinitions '{ "ORGANIZATIONNAME" = "My Company";}'
or
defaults write com.apple.Xcode PBXCustomTemplateMacroDefinitions '{ "ORGANIZATIONNAME" = "My Company";}'

Offline Google Earth Use (ZT)

For those of you wondering what happens to Google Earth (GE) when you don't have an Internet connection, the amazing thing is that it will work. But, it only works with what you have installed in your cache. If you anticipate taking your laptop somewhere where you won't have a broadband connection, you can still use GE for a limited area of viewing. Or you can use it for doing a demonstration somewhere without an Internet connection.

First, go to the menu item Tools->Options and select the "Cache" tab. You can make the cache size as large as 2000 MB (i.e. 2 Gigabytes). This will give you more data to work with. Then, you need to spin the globe to the area you want data for and zoom into that area. The most recent things you have looked at will be what's in your cache. I think you need to turn on the layers for the information you want cached as well (for example, 'roads' or 'golf'). You also might want to turn on any of your placemarks related to the region you want to look at.

It doesn't take much of an area to fill up the cache. Especially if the area you are viewing has lots of high-res pictures. But, I read about someone using this in the remote areas of Africa with a GPS and a laptop to find his way around.

There is also a tip that you can save your cache(s) under different files and then swap them out to look at different areas (read about it here). Could be useful if you were travelling without Internet access for a prolonged period of time.

How To Find Your IP Address

Windows XP or Windows 2000

Run the command prompt (usually under Start > Run)
In the Run window field, type cmd
Type ipconfig /all

Macintosh OS X

Open the System Preferences application.
Click the Network icon
In the Show: drop down, select Network Status
Look for the Built-in Ethernet item, or other applicable network interface
The IP address is shown next in the area to the right

Macintosh OS 9

The following will always work for fixed-IP-address machines (i.e., ethernet or "premium" dialup); they will work for normal "dynamically-assigned IP address" dialup machines only while the connection is running.

(Shortcut) If you are using NCSA Telnet:
Choose Show Network Numbers from the Network menu, OR
When you type a command requiring your IP address, press command-I (or choose Send IP number from the Network menu) instead of typing the number-- it will be typed for you.
If your Mac uses MacTCP
MacTCP will show up in the Control Panels
Open it -- the IP address is displayed there, labeled as such.
If your Mac uses Open Transport
TCP/IP will show up in the Control Panels
Open it -- the IP address is displayed there, labeled as such.

In a terminal window, use the command

You may get a variety of responses back. The one you're looking for is one that includes the words "BROADCAST" and "inet," where "inet" introduces the IP address -- e.g.,

le0: flags=<863UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 128.8.10.95 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 128.8.10.255
